In computer networks, downloading means to receive data from a remote system, usually from a server such as a web server, FTP server, email server or other similar systems. This is different from upload, where data is sent to a remote server. A download is a file offered for downloading or that has been downloaded, or the process of receiving such a file.

When downloading, whole files are usually transferred for local storage and subsequent use, unlike streaming, when data is used almost immediately while the transfer is still ongoing and which may not be stored for a long time. Web sites offering streaming media or media displayed in a browser, such as YouTube, increasingly limit the ability of users to store these materials on their computers after they are received.

Downloading is not the same as data transfer; moving or copying data between two storage devices will transfer data, but receiving data from the Internet is downloading.
