How to Download Maps in "Minecraft" in Windows 7
"Minecraft" is a game that allows players to explore and change an open world environment while surviving all the hazards. The procedural nature of the maps means that each time you start a new game, the environment is different. If you prefer to play maps that have been custom-designed by other "Minecraft" fans and players you can download these for free from the Internet. These maps are usually archived in order to save bandwidth and must be extracted to the correct folder on your computer before you can use them in the game.
Download Websites
"Minecraft" maps are available as free downloads from websites such as MinecraftMaps.com, Minecraft World Share and MinecraftDL (links in Resources). To download the archived map file to your computer, click the "Download" or "Download Map" button. These websites have maps in different categories that are suitable for different playing styles, such as surviving, solving puzzles and killing monsters. The maps are typically made by fans who create them for a specific playing style and distribute them for free.
Copying to Saves Folder
Once the download is completed, you need to select the archived file and copy it to the "Minecraft" "Saves" folder. To do this, right-click the downloaded file and select "Copy" from the context menu. Alternatively, left-click the file and press "Ctrl-C" on your keyboard to copy the file. Next you need to launch "Minecraft" and click the "Options" button on the launcher window. Click the link next to "Game location on disk" shown on the launcher options window that opens. This opens the "Minecraft" folder on your computer. Open the "Saves" folder inside the "Minecraft" folder and then press "Ctrl-V" to paste the archived map file.
Extraction
Once you have copied the downloaded archived file to the "Saves" folder, it needs to be extracted before you can use it. Windows 7 has native support for archived files in the .ZIP format so you do not need to install any external programs to extract the files. Right-click the archived map file and select "Extract All" from the context menu. Click the "Extract" button to extract the map files to the "Saves" folder on your computer. This extracts it in the right format so you can open it in "Minecraft."
Selecting the Map
To start playing in the map, you need to log in to your "Minecraft" account. You will be asked for your username and password in the launcher window. Click the "Login" button and select "Singleplayer." From here you can click the name of the downloaded map on the "Select World" screen. Click "Play Selected World" to load the map and play the game. Some custom maps have special instructions on how to play. These instructions are shown on the download and description page of the map or as a separate text file that is extracted with the map.
