Thanks for your reply and suggestions.  It took me a while to sort this out but there were several MS Office or Security Updates installed in early to mid-June.  I believe my laptop's C: drive and DropBox files became corrupt and unreadable after a Security Update for Adobe Flash was installed on 6/7/18.  After uninstalling it, I can once again access C: although I found that a few Word files saved as PDFs are shown in code.  Luckily, I have the same files saved as Word docs.  So, for now I think it's OK.
