But, it hasbeen badly conveyed with phrasing that destroys much of the beautyof this classic work. An excellent author's turn of phrase, ispreserved by an accomplished translator; this 'rendition' does notimprove the text by its use of English simplifications andre-phrasings of the original literature. It is a disservice toanyone whom thinks they are reading Hesse.Object lesson: you getwhat you pay for -- I wish I'd gotten the (Buddha cover art)version, that appears to be same as paperback I've well read fordecades: that superior version is also available as Kindle Edition,by Hermann Hesse (Author), Hilda Rosner (Translator). Next timeI'll compare 'sample' with a known edition to avoid spending evenvery little money on something with damaged literaryquality.Siddhartha0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Great book, questionable interpretation.By Ian WMany years ago, Iread this book in school, and remember how profound and impact fullit was on me. Now i'm grown, with children of my own, I have beenrecommending books to my 14 year old daughter, this being one ofthem. When it arrived, I nostalgically glanced through it, andimmediately noticed a spelling error while browsing. I didn't payit too much mind; these things can happen, especially in translatedworks. However, after my daughter finished reading it, shementioned that there were several instances of poor grammar, repeated words (back-to-back), and misspellings riddled throughout. She said that she loved the book, but found the mistakes to besomewhat distracting, which is a shame, considering this book is amasterpiece.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bestbook I've ever read!!!By Chevy girlThis is my number one favoritebook I read it more times than I can even count.
Siddhartha is a 1922 novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with thespiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddharthaduring the time of the Gautama Buddha. The book, Hesse's ninthnovel, was written in German, in a simple, lyrical style. It waspublished in the U.S. in 1951 and became influential during the1960s. Hesse dedicated Siddhartha to Romain Rolland and WilhelmGundert. The word Siddhartha is made up of two words in theSanskrit language, siddha (achieved) + artha (what was searchedfor), which together means "he who has found meaning (ofexistence)" or "he who has attained his goals". In fact, theBuddha's own name, before his renunciation, was Siddhartha Gautama,Prince of Kapilvastu. In this book, the Buddha is referred to as"Gotama".
About the AuthorHermann Hesse (German; July 2, 1877– August 9, 1962) was a German-born, Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Steppenwolf,Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores anindividual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge andspirituality. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.Biography: Family background Hermann Hesse was born on 2 July 1877in the Black Forest town of Calw in Württemberg,Germany. His parents served in India at a mission under theauspices of the Basel Mission, a Protestant Christian missionarysociety. Hesse's mother, Marie Gundert, was born at such a missionin India in 1842. In describing her own childhood, she said, "Ahappy child I was not..." As was usual among missionaries at thetime, she was left behind in Europe at the age of four when herparents went to India. Becoming a writer: On 17 October 1895, Hessebegan working in the bookshop in Tübingen, which hada specialized collection in theology, philology, and law. Hesse'stasks consisted of organizing, packing, and archiving the books. After the end of each twelve-hour workday, Hesse pursued his ownwork, and he spent his long, idle Sundays with books rather thanfriends. Hesse studied theological writings and later Goethe,Lessing, Schiller, and Greek mythology. He also began readingNietzsche in 1895, and that philosopher's ideas of "dual...impulsesof passion and order" in humankind was a heavy influence on most ofhis novels. By 1898, Hesse had a respectable income that enabledfinancial independence from his parents. During this time, heconcentrated on the works of the German Romantics, including muchof the work from Clemens Brentano, Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff,Friedrich Hölderlin and Novalis. In letters to hisparents, he expressed a belief that "the morality of artists isreplaced by aesthetics."
