Minecraft Mo’ Creatures Mod: Installation, Taming & How to Use Guide
Article Contents
Mo’ Creatures is a mod that adds many new types of mobs to your Minecraft world. Alongside this comes new mechanics, dimensions, foods, items, blocks and more. It’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular Minecraft mods.
Currently, the highest version of Minecraft that Mo’ Creatures supports is 1.12.2, and there is no indication of whether the developers will go higher. It seems that development in general has slowed. For individual animals, you should look at the Mo’ Creatures fandom.
We’ve tested this mod and wrote the following guide for Minecraft 1.12.2, as it has the best modding support. If you want to check out some more guides like this, take a look through our Minecraft Mods area.
How to Install the Mo’ Creatures Mod
You can download the Mo’ Creatures Mod from CurseForge. Choose the 1.12.2 download link on the right hand side. For Mo’ Creatures to work, you will also need to download the Custom Mob Spawner mod.
You need to then drop these files into your Minecraft mods folder, which can be found in the default installation directory. With Forge installed, open Minecraft, select ‘Mods’ from the main menu and then press the ‘Open Mods Folder’ button located in the bottom left corner, this is where you should place the JAR file. If you don’t know how to do any of these steps, or haven’t installed Forge yet, read our in-depth Forge & Mod Installation Guide.
How to Use the Mo’ Creatures Mod
With both mods installed, start up a new Minecraft world. It’s a good idea to create one in creative mode, so that you can fly about and ensure that the Mo’ Creatures mobs are spawning correctly. If the mod is working, you will see all sorts of new mobs in your game world.
Some of the new mobs that you might find in your world are the likes of Ostrich, Big Cats, Wyvern’s, Kitty’s, Snakes, Elephants, Mammoths, Bears and more. You might also notice a bit of a difference in world generation.
Fix for Mobs Invisible/Not Spawning
Some user, myself included face the issue of mobs not spawning or appearing in the Minecraft world after installing Mo’ Creatures. There are a few things that you can try to fix this issue:
- Edit the filenames of both mod files, removing any symbols such as ‘+’. This fixed the issue for me, I simply renamed both JAR files to MoCreatures.jar and CustomMobSpawner.jar and mobs spawned normally.
- Ensure that you have the CustomMobSpawner mod installed alongside Mo’ Creatures, as that handles all the spawning of mobs in the game world.
- Some users have suggested heading to the Mo’ Creatures website which can be found in the mod description page, and downloaded the file from there as it’s more up-to date.
Taming
One of the key mechanics in Mo’ Creatures is taming, to make the animal yours. Not all mobs can be tamed, only some. In most cases, taming is a simple process and done by feeding a mob the correct type of food.
Tamed mobs can follow you, be picked up, equipped with inventory space, bred, renamed and more. Below we’ve put together a quick guide and list of taming some of the animals in Mo’ Creatures.
- Bear: Can be tamed by giving a cub any type of meat, either cooked or raw.
- Big Cat: For Lions & Tigers, drop either Raw Fish or Raw Porkchops next to a cub.
- Birds: Drop Seeds on the ground, after a bird has eaten them, right click on it to start the taming process.
- Bunny: Bunnies and Rabbits are very easy to tame, all you have to do is right click on one, and it will be placed on your head where it can be named and tamed.
- Crabs: Right click on a Crab whilst holding a fishing net to tame it. When released, it will be tamed.
- Dolphins: Similar to Horses in Vanilla Minecraft, Dolphins can be tamed by right clicking them until they allow you to mount them.
- Elephant/Mammoth: These large creatures can only be tamed as Calves, and require either 10 Sugar Lumps or 5 Cakes to tame.
- Fox: Feed a Fox Raw Turkey in order to tame it, only then will it not attack you.
- Goat: Unlike other creatures, Goats can be tamed by being fed practically any food item, including Rotten Flesh and Spider Eyes.
- Horse: Start by equipping a Horse with a Saddle, then repeatedly try to ride it until the Horse no longer bucks you off.
- Kitty: Drop some Cooked Fish near a Kitty/Kitten in order to tame it, you might have to step back a few blocks as it will be scared of you.
- Komodo Dragon: To tame a Komodo Dragon with Mo’ Creatures, you need to hatch an egg within several blocks of where it was placed. If you don’t do this, it will be born wild.
- Manticore: Kill wild Manticores to obtain a Manticore Egg. Place the egg down, walk away a few blocks and a baby Manticore will hatch, which will be tamed.
- Ostrich: Simply hatch an Ostrich egg.
- Raccoon: Like Goats, Raccoons can be fed any edible item.
- Scorpion: Find Baby Scorpions, which can be found on adult Scorpions back. Kill the adult, and pick up the babies and rename them with a Medallion to tame them.
- Snake: Adult snakes can’t be tamed. Instead, you need to find a Snake Egg. Place it in a well lit area, and the egg will hatch and be tamed.
- Turkey: Feed Turkeys Melon Seeds in order to tame them.
- Turtles: Drop Sugar Cane or Melon Slices next to Turtles on the ground. When dropping, make sure they’re on the same block as the Turtle.
- Wyvern: To tame a Wyvern, you will need to obtain a Wyvern Egg. Place it, and in around one or two Minecraft days, the egg will hatch into a friendly Baby Wyvern.
How to Rename Creatures
When you first tame a mob in Mo’ Creatures, you’ll often be given the opportunity to name your new animal. This isn’t final though, as you can in-fact change the name of an animal at any time.
To do so, you’ll require a Medallion. Tamed Kitties, Manticores and Big Cats will drop medallions if they die, but only if a Medallion has previously been used on them.
Alternatively, the player can craft Medallions pretty easily. All you need to do is place two Leather inside of a Crafting Table, as well as a single Gold Ingot (check the above image).
Hostile Mobs
Some mobs will always be aggressive and attempt to attack the player on site. Although some may remain neutral, and only attack when provoked. The easiest way to prevent being attacked in Mo’ Creatures is to keep your distance. Although taming the animals beforehand also works.
Here is a list of hostile and aggressive creatures:
- Big Cat: Will attack if you get too close, or use a whip on another Big Cat nearby.
- Wyvern: These creatures will typically attack you if you get within a 12-16 block radius. Attacks will hurt, as they also poison their target.
- Manticore: Like other mobs so far, the Manticore will sprint at and attack the player if they choose to get too close.
- Bears: Brown Bears and Grizzly Bears will only attack at night usually, similar to other hostile Vanilla mobs. However, Polar Bears will always be aggressive to the player.
- Snakes: Unfortunately, it’s hard to predict the behavior of Snakes. Some will be passive, some neutral and others hostile.
- Horsemob: Spawning at night, Horsemobs are hostile and will attack the player on sight.
- Big Golem: Golems usually don’t want trouble. They’ll keep their guard up if they spot you, but get too close and they’ll throw blocks at you and become hostile.
- Komodo Dragon: Get too close to one of these (within a 12-16 block radius) and you’ll be chased down and poisoned.
